Goggleworks Artscapes Committee Meeting
October 4, 2010
1pm

Nate, Judy, Sheila, Mary Lou, Ed, Eugene, Alan, George, Suzanne, Fran

We agreed to focus on a couple of projects that could be accomplished and completed in the near future first. And then discussed other project plans that people are working on.

Alan discussed plans he created previously, for a Japanese Sculpture Garden in the courtyard by the café. This plan proposes brick planters with bamboo against the walls, the concrete floor to be covered with chipped limestone gravel that is raked with a special wooden rake (that could be constructed in the woodshop) and Japanese artifacts from Japanese shrines and temples.
  • the bamboo should be red bamboo which is beautiful and has a random pattern of red and green. There is also the possibility of free bamboo from Karen Palcho. Bamboo is a hardy evergreen ‘weed’. Rainwater could be diverted into the courtyard for watering the bamboo. The bricks could be made from sludge from the ceramics studio which is a waste material normally and the bricks inscribed with the names of people who sponsor the project.
  • The gravel is a chipped limestone. The gravel will need to be 2 – 3” deep. Once it is raked it locks into place – it needs to be raked once a month – this could be done in correlation with school groups that visit. Screen could be placed over the drain on the floor to contain the gravel.
  • Artifacts might cost $300 TO $900
  • Moss liquefied with buttermilk will produce moss to grow on large stones.
  • A bench is an option
  • A shrine

The total project was originally figured at $2000 but may cost less with some of the new ideas.

Next we all went down to the basement to look at the wrought iron musical notes from a John Tesh concert and also used at the Philly Flower Show. It was unanimously decided that they would look great on the outside of the theater on the corrugated grey wall.

Ed urged Gene and Alan to take their ideas/proposals to Gust as soon as possible.

Other possible projects:
Nate
1 – wants to replace the fence remnants on the entrance from 3rd St with some kind of ornamental wrought iron fence that is too high to skateboard on. He suggested some fencing that has opening for art projects.
2 – wants LED or double G lights in stripes around the top of the chimney from the hot glass studio.
3 – themed painted wood covering for the windows on the Washington St side of Building 2. The art could be made by different community groups or Gworks artists and with a theme there could be a contest. Win - Win.

Judy
  • showed us her photos of the trees and poles along Walnut St that need lights and flags. Gene suggested solar lights – he is going to purchase and sample a set.

Adry
  • presented the idea of sculpture platforms that could be rented for sculptures is a rotating exhibit. It was decided that we would need to find some practical way to secure the sculptures.

Fran
  • brought pictures of the huge concrete blocks on Washington St between the buildings. This space has been approved for a bamboo garden with hanging potato vines. The city will provide the soil.

Sheila
- has plans for the sign on the corner of 2nd and Walnut streets. There is enough glass pieces from the glass studio for a number of mosaic projects.
- Bill Scheck of the Boyertown W. Jr High has created HUGE mosaic murals with his art students every year.
- And B&G Glass has a continual pile of broken glass and mirrors that are carted off to the landfill and we could have for free.
- we should reinstate the Wish List.
- we should have sub-committees for people with projects using similar supplies

Suzanne’s project was pushed off the table to be looked at on November 1st when we will meet again in the café at 1 pm.
